“The War Clubs”
The Human Bone Tribal War Clubs
These two human leg bones were hand-carved into “War Clubs” in The United States of America. These two sculptures represent the primal tribal instincts and the dedication to a certain way of life. Regardless of the life people choose to live humans have a primal instinct to protect their “Lives” from enemies.
The entire concept of war is “Defending or Protecting” human lives from injustice. When there is an injustice that is deemed unforgivable…There will be a conflict. Many people are willing to fight to their deaths if there was an unforgivable injustice. If you look closely here you can see an “Eyeball” on the top of the bone with tears streaming down the sides carved into the bone.
Human nature is to build a defense system of some kind. Some people practice martial arts, some people buy weapons, some people buy security systems, but there are some people who will make their own weapons.
People who make their own weapons have a certainty that there will be more attacks in the future. The history of the lives they have lived dictates that there will be ongoing conflict until the day they die… This would be referred to as “Heritage”.
In many areas of the world all through history, it has been commonplace to decapitate their enemies and keep their heads as trophies. These barbaric rituals span back millenniums and these “War Clubs” represent this primal instinct of “Defense”. Many tribes around the world create a number of artifacts that were from their opposing enemies.
It is a primal tribal instinct to keep “Trophies of War”. These two leg bones were sculpted into the concept of “Weapons for War”. The concept is that the bones were obtained from an enemy and were carved into weapons to defend themselves from that same opposing enemy at their next battle. Every retaliation creates another retaliation, and this keeps war going on indefinitely.
The inability to forgive an injustice is what drives people to murder. All war is justified by the people who are involved in the conflict. All participants will die for their cause, regardless of what the remainder of the world thinks. That is a natural human “Primal Instinct” that spans back to the beginning of time itself.
Hand Carved In The United States of America
I chose these two human leg bones specifically for this project to attempt to convey the severities of war and conflict. These bones were unusually heavy and the bone density was exceptional in most areas. Each bone has the face of a tribal member who was harmed by injustice.
You can see their eyes on the top of the bone and you can see their face and jaws are reflecting the emotions of battle. At the opposite end of each bone, you find the head of a “Snake”. The snake’s head is symbolic of the enemy who is responsible for the injustice.
Along the shaft of each bone, you will see tribal markings that were hand-carved in an unusually symmetrical pattern. Each mark on these bones represents one year of battle that this tribe has survived. The “War Clubs” are specifically designed to continue the ongoing conflict. All war begins with the inability to forgive an injustice.
There are only two sides to any war…” Attacker and Defender”. Many tribes around the world train every day for battle the same as militaries prepare for defense. These tribes will make their own weapons by hand and certainly will have a special connection. These weapons are created from pain and suffering. Pain and suffering that was caused by someone who harmed their loved ones.
You can see on the ends of the bones the carvings go much deeper the same as the pain does. The ends of the bones were carved much deeper to gain a sense of emotion in both the “Tribal Member” and “The Snake”. Clearly, you can see the anger carved into the face of this tribal member.
At the other end of the bone, you can see the image of “The Snake” that clearly represents the evil behind the “Heritage of Injustice”. Snakes have been the representation of evil for thousands of years. Snakes are “Cold Blooded Killers” who devour their prey.
“These tribal “War Clubs” represent both sides of vicious war and conflict and their dedication to death itself…Created From War.”
You can see here the sinister emotions of the serpent as you are looking into the “Eyes of The Devil”. The snake has a crown of evil injustices that he has created and displays his evil dishonor proudly upon his head. The serpent is “Watering at the Mouth” for his prey while the tribal member on the other end of the bone has tears of pain flowing from his eyes ready to kill.
Additional Sculpture Observations
“I rarely create something that is self-explanatory such as these tribal “War Clubs”, however, the depth of the concept of these pieces could never truly be seen without my assistance of explanation”.
You will notice the tribal member has only one eye exposed in the sculpture as to where the serpent has two eyes present. The one eye represents the tribal member who is forced into retaliation. The reason there are not two human eyes present in this sculpture is the representation of a man who sees the war in two separate ways.
Perhaps the war was preventable, or perhaps forgiveness would bring the attacker down, maybe there is a way to resolve the conflict without hurting more people in the process. This type of critical thinking would represent the logical side of the long-term effects of war.
The eye shown on the sculpture is seeking vengeance only and has already decided that retaliation or initiation are the only two choices for injustice. If a man were to set both of his eyes upon the war it would certainly bring death upon him. The inability to see the future of the aftermath the war will create…is the loss of reason that will end in bloodshed.
The bones are wrapped in blood-soaked leather straps. The straps were soaked in my blood and some water and were then hand-tied to the human bones. The soaking of the leather straps makes the leather pliable and the straps then fit so tightly that they become part of the sculpture.
I did not feel as if the “War Clubs” were properly representing the message I was trying to convey without the use of human blood. War always ends in blood. Evil, blood, killing, war is the work of an enemy, and retaliation and bloodshed define many histories of many countries throughout the history of all mankind.
“Evil will set out to war with both eyes wide shut, and will not care how many lives are sacrificed for the desired outcome of their evil intentions. The serpent on these human bones has both eyes wide shut…And these eyes represent pure evil.”
Every war has a victim and a victor…the reality of war that is oftentimes minimized. Any war that creates death on both sides is a war that is already lost. Total conquering and complete domination will not end a war. The second a war ends…Another war begins. There is an equal and/or opposite reaction for every violating injustice.
“War defines the world in which we have lived all throughout world history…The question is will war dictate the future of all mankind?…and if so…Why?”
